Ground Truthing Through Community Narratives

Silvia R. González, Urban Planning, and Paul M. Ong, Urban Planning & Asian American Studies, UCLA

One of the most contentious transformations impacting Los Angeles is the gentrification of neighborhoods of color and displacement of vulnerable residents and businesses. Ground Truthing through Community Narratives uses multimedia content packaged into StoryMaps to document the stresses and resilience of communities coping with neighborhood change, gentrification, and displacement in Los Angeles. The principle behind this project is generating knowledge and understanding from the grassroots. While academic researchers can quantify many dimensions of neighborhood challenges and opportunities, it is just as important to document the lived experiences, priorities, and aspirations of communities. This project also explicitly includes capacity-building opportunities for community partners through “public narratives” development workshops.
